The non-committal title of the song may reflect its history: Before settling on the English words that appear in the strophic song's two stanzas Ives had already produced versions with two different German texts: Sehnsucht ("Ich konnte heute nicht schlaffen") on words by Lobedanze adapted from a poem by Vinje, and Rosenzweige ("Wohl manchen Rosenzweig") by Steiler.

The song is promising in its use of an active bass line under rippling arpeggios in the piano's right hand. The harmonies are quite static at first, staying rooted on "C," but soon begin to move without taking any unusual chromatic excursions. The singer expresses confidence in what the future may hold in a pair of strophic stanzas inspired, respectively, by sunrise and sunset.
