Musicology:
This is a pretty and naïve little love song. Ives dated it September 1898 on the third of his ink copies of it. He also wrote on it, "composed at the request of Mr [John W.] Catchpole who wished a pretty encore song."

Because of You, S.218Year: 1898
Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
Pr. Instruments: Voice & Piano
Catchpole was a tenor active in New York. Ives also wrote on the manuscript, "Sung by Miss Carrie Allen at Miss Hollister's Concert Sept '88 but different words."
It is, in short, a perfectly adequate but in no way outstanding parlor song. Ives did not fit it with new words nor publish it in his 114 Songs.
