Possibly Ives first composition, at age 12 (in 1887), this touching little song tells of the home funeral of the family pet: "One evening just at sunset we laid him in the grave, a poor and humble animal his heart was true and brave. All the family joined us in solemn march and slow from the garden place beneath the trees and where the sunflowers grow". The music is a simple major key hymn-like tune with quite lovely suspended passing tones.
