Musicology:
For whatever reason, Joplin did not pursue publication of this work in his lifetime, at least not vigorously. It appeared posthumously in 1917, shortly after his death on April 1 that same year. The composer certainly came up with colorful titles of his works, but Reflection Rag is hardly reflective in mood or character, if that is what the composer was attempting to suggest here. More accurate is the parenthetical description that follows the title in the published score Syncopated Musings. But then that tag might also be applied, at least in part, to almost all of Joplin's piano works. Reflection Rag is a bright, charming work, its main theme jolly as it sashays along in the sunshine in its mostly upper register sonorities. The second subject turns almost nocturnal and mysterious, but without breaking the rhythmic vitality and sense of fun. About midway through, the thematic development shows considerable subtlety as Joplin deftly goes from one offshoot to another, rhythms brimming with energy, the mood festive and joyous. Lasting about four minutes, this is one of Joplin's less-encountered works, but one fully deserving greater attention. -
