All periods of Malipiero's life contain inferior pieces alongside his important ones, and his work of the 1930s was no exception. His best music of the 1930s and 1940s was found in his symphonies, concertos, and other instrumental compositions such as the Sette Invenzioni (1933). This piece and its companion Quattro Invenzioni (1933) were originally intended for use in the soundtrack of Pirandello's film Acciaio, which was directed by Walter Ruttmann. Malipiero carefully coordinated these seven inventions with passages in the film; for example, specific dissonant sections coincide with recorded noises of a steel foundry. To the composer's disappointment, only a small percentage of his music was used, and much of the synchronicity he intended was lost. The seven invenzioni are modal in syntax and freely float as generally unstructured displays of orchestral color, only occasionally returning to identifiable themes.
