Capriccio, for orchestraYear: 1955
- Ballade
- Notturno
- Scherzo
Tansman was clearly influenced by the French composers of his time - Ravel, Roussel, Honegger, Milhaud - but even more by Stravinsky, with whom he had a close friendship. The result was an eclectic style embodying impressionism, neo-classicism, polytonality, and serialism. Capriccio is one of the most Stravinskian pieces that he wrote. It comprises three parts. The opening Ballade is rambunctious and agitated, evoking memories of Le Sacre du Printemps and Petrushka. The second, Notturno, is a piece of night music with lonely flutes and tremolando strings that at moments seems to have been extracted from Le Sacre. The last, Scherzo, is back to the world of Petrushka. n
