Rachmaninov wrote these as an exercise for his composition class. Less distinguished than the Nocturnes, they nevertheless contain many of the hallmarks of his mature style. Although Tchaikovsky was deeply impressed by these pieces, their obscurity is not entirely undeserved. The Romance, an Andante in f-sharp minor, is the best of the four, showing Rachmaninov's early lyrical gift, and his ability to create an effective climax. The Prélude, Allegro in e-flat minor, Mélodie, Andante in E major, and Gavotte, Allegro in D major, while competent, are less interesting and could easily be disregarded.
