Musicology:
This Voluntary begins with a very strong beginning, almost in a march tempo. It is filled with dotted rhythms and ornaments. Purcell varies the treatment of his material again as well as the texture. He writes portions of imitative counterpoint followed by some very free fantasia-like music. After some note against note counterpoint that becomes more melismatic as it progresses, Purcell writes some flourishing runs in both hands and finishes dramatically. -
