Musicology:
This Ave Maria by Franz Liszt was composed in 1881 in two versions: for voice and piano and for solo piano. Although neither was published in his lifetime, Liszt often gave manuscript copies to friends and students for their enjoyment or study. Barely two minutes long, this composition begins with a simple walking line written in unison octaves for both treble and bass parts. As this tonal pattern is expanded, a lyrical melody develops and is carried by a straightforward chord progression. As the bass line continues this theme, the treble line introduces a second theme, expressed in falling thirds that are reminiscent of the sound of a brook flowing smoothly over timeworn stones. A simply and quietly expressed closing to this work expresses a solemn amen.
