Dating from the middle period of Alexander Glazunov's musical maturity, the Ouverture solonnelle (1900) aptly demonstrates the composer's structural sense and orchestrational skill. True to its title, the work unfolds as not only solemn, but somber. The principal motif, melodious and attractive, is repeated frequently as it migrates through the orchestra with mounting intensity, until a majestic finale brings the work to a close.
