Musicology:
This set of keyboard variations is a much more mature work than its low Koechel number would indicate. There is some thought that it may have been intended as the last movement of a piano sonata rather than as an independent work. The theme itself proceeds elegantly with a cautious optimism that wants to break out, and the variations are all elegant and straightforward. The penultimate variation turns to the minor mode without disrupting the work's overall mood, and the last one features some busy and flashy runs for the right hand. -
