Musicology:
Although it was written almost immediately before the famous "Fountains of Rome, " this is an unruly and gargantuan work in three movements beginning with a 25-minute opener. The composition is diffuse and unruly in form, too easily losing the thread of symphonic argument. There are some tremendously exciting and effective things in it. It tends towards massive statements at the high points. Interesting fare for completists. -
