Musicology:
Gli Amori d'Apollo e di Dafne (The Loves of Apollo and Daphne) was the second opera composed by Francesco Cavalli. It is to a libretto by Giovanni Francesco Busenello, the same author who wrote the text for Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea. Gli Amori is in a completely different mode from L'Incoronazione, and shows the author's versatility with dramatic content and poetic forms. Unlike the stern and amoral historical drama of L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Gli Amori d'Apollo e di Dafne is a pastoral story with mythological and fantastical elements woven into it to create an attractive pageant. Cavalli's setting is sensitive to the poetry of Busenello, who wrote in lyric poetry and in Italian declamatory verse forms. The recitative and lyric portions of the opera move fluently into one another, and lyric portions sometimes interrupt the recitative. Added ballets make the presentation of the story attractive and delightful. The premiere of Gli Amori d'Apollo e di Dafne took place during Carnivale in 1640. -
