Rodrigo described this little piece as part of an "imaginary" suite touring the Spanish landscape. The composer managed neither to write music about every region nor to group what he did accomplish into a formal suite, although Junto al Generalife and Bajando de la meseta are also part of this family. En los trigales takes the listener to a wheat field in Castilla la Vieja. Rodrigo remarked that the people there have a taste for loud music, but this piece, no matter how fast and intricate its outer sections may be, lurks mainly at the low end of the dynamic scale. It begins with a quick figure immediately repeated more softly, as if a call and response between two field workers. This is more of a virile dance than a song, however, strongly accented with fast turns. The dance winds down and the music becomes more truly vocal, a very free recitative ornamented with an imitation of distant bell sounds in the instrument's high register, complete with harmonics. With fast runs up and down the scale, the dance music returns, but now the dance is heard from a greater remove and ends with a single, quietly ringing high note.© All Music Guide
