Musicology:
Buxtehude wrote two manualiter (manuals only, no pedal part required) toccatas. Both are in G major. This one is the longer of the two. It consists of a free section, a fugue, and a return to free material. The opening free section is longer than average. The fugue has a quirky subject. The end of the fugue is vague, and after the last repetition of the fugue subject there are another 37 measures of free material. Like the two toccatas with pedal, this toccata leans more heavily toward free rhapsodic material and contains relatively little imitative material in comparison to the praeludia. -
