  • Fürwahr, er trug unsere Krankheit, Passion cantata for SSATB voices, 2 violins, 2 violas da gamba, violone or basson and continuo, BuxWV31
    Year: 1680
    Genre: Cantata
    Pr. Instrument: Chorus/Choir

In this cantata, Buxtehude sets a text from Isaiah 53:4-5. The work is scored for two sopranos, alto, tenor, bass, two violins, two viols da gamba, violone, and continuo. The work is a sacred concerto in the purest sense of the genre, as is usually the case when Buxtehude sets a prosaic biblical text. Buxtehude employs a wide variety of vocal combinations in the cantata including solos, duos, trios, and all five of the singers together. He repeats the text of Isaiah 53:4 twice, each time the first half is sung by bass soloist and the second half is sung by a duo or a trio. His setting of verse five finally employs the full ensemble and stays with the full ensemble most of the time.
