Concerto for 2 Pianos (3-Hands) and Orchestra, Op.104Year: 1969
Genre: Concerto
Pr. Instrument: Piano
- 1.Allegro moderato
- 2.Andante con moto
- 3.Allegro
As is usually the case with Arnold's concertos, this is a concise work; it spans no more than a quarter-hour. It is lighthearted in the main. Its unusual instrumentation is the result of a stroke which cost the pianist Cyril Smith the use of his left hand. He built up a career playing three-handed duos with his wife, Phyllis Sellick. Each of the three brief movements is in a clear form, with easily understood melodies and form. Arnold's sense of musical humor is prevalent, including one loony tremolando passage which recalls the cliches of silent film or turn-of-the-century salon piano playing.
