The canzona was becoming an archaic genre by the end of the seventeenth century when Buxtehude was active. It was an imitative genre, often multi-sectional. Like in Frescobaldi's canzonas, Buxtehude often separates different imitative sections with segments of free material. This canzona includes three imitative sections, the first in common time, the middle section in 6/8 time, and the last section in 3/2 time. The subjects of the three imitative sections are vaguely thematically related. Like BuxWV 168, very little imitative material separates the three imitative sections.
