  • Sonata for Cello and Piano No.2 in C, Op.26, No.2
    Key: C
    Year: 1935
    Genre: Chamber Sonata
    Pr. Instrument: Cello
    • 1.Allegro moderato ed amabile
    • 2.Allegro agitato, non troppo mosso
    • 3.Andantino cantabile, senza lentezza
    • 4.Final a la roumaine

Like its predecessor, which shares the same opus number despite the two works being almost forty years apart, the second cello sonata is also a lengthy work in four movements. But there the similarities end. This later work embodies a musical language much closer to the spectacularly unsuccessful Symphonie Concertante and the chromatic folk idiom for which it is most remembered becomes marked in the last two movements. Dedicated to the immortal Pablo Casals, it echoes in places Bartók's Romanian Dances of some twenty years earlier.
