  • Sicut Moses exaltavit serpentem, for soprano, 2 violins, viola da gamba and continuo, BuxWV97
    Genre: Other Solo Vocal
    Pr. Instrument: Soprano

In this cantata Buxtehude sets a text from the Gospel of John 3:14-15 which was the gospel reading for Trinity Sunday. As is so typical in Buxtehude's works setting biblical texts, the work is in concerto style. It is scored for two violins, viola da gamba, and continuo. The voice and the strings are in constant alternation. While the technical demands on the soprano in this cantata are notable, the string writing is very intense and fairly difficult in this particular cantata.
