Musicology:
Although Schubert wrote songs on heroes, soldiers, battles, and wars, he only rarely directly addressed contemporary military events. Schubert was, of course, born and raised during the Napoleonic period when Austria was frequently at war, and when Vienna itself was twice occupied. But only after Austria and its allies had beaten the Grande Armée did Schubert compose two occasional songs on those victories. This one, Die Befreier Europas in Paris (The Liberators of Europe in Paris) (D. 104), is from May 1814 and has a heartfelt if slightly pompous-sounding major key tune with fanfares in the piano accompaniment's right hand and double-dotted march rhythms in its left. This is a sincere composition, but not on the musical level of Schubert's memorable works. -
