  • Singet dem Herrn ein Neues Lied, for soprano, violin and continuo, BuxWV98
    Genre: Other Solo Vocal
    Pr. Instrument: Soprano
This cantata sets the first four verses of Psalm 98. It is the only Buxtehude cantata scored for solo voice and solo violin. The violin writing is interesting and fairly technically challenging, and may have been intended for performance by a specific Lübeck violinist such as Peter Bruhns. As one would expect from a psalm setting, the work is a true concerto in the purest sense of the genre. It consists of a number of short contrasting sections. Also the violin and the soprano are used both alternatingly and occasionally in tandem taking advantage of various contrasting timbres as was so popular in the concerto style.
