The British Empire MarchYear: 1924
Genre: Other Orchestral
Pr. Instrument: Orchestra
The Empire March was one of two works written by Elgar for the Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924. It has been unfrequently played since. Unlike its more famous siblings, in this march the initial section and the Trio do not contrast strongly with each other. The former is more militaristic, the latter is only slightly more subdued, so that the return of the first section after the Trio merges seamlessly with it. The brief coda includes bell tolls in celebratory mood.
