Musicology:
This suite is a bit unusual among the rest of Froberger's output. It comes from a collection of six suites alongside toccatas, canzonas, and fantasies in a manuscript from 1649. All of the other suites in the collection include either three or four dances beginning with an allemande and ending with a courante and sarabande. A few of the suites include a gigue which, if included, is placed after the allemande. This suite begins instead with a set of six variations on the folk song known as "Die Meÿerin," by Georg Greflinger. The tune was also known as Hylas wil kein Weib nicht haben or Schweiget mir von Frauen nehmen, and Johann Adam Reincken also wrote variations on the same tune. The variations were followed by a courante, a double, and a sarabande. The courante, the double, and the sarabande each retain the melody and harmonic progression of the Meÿerin tune. As the last of the suites collected in the 1649 book, this work makes a fitting conclusion to the book's collection of suites as each of the suites in the collection employs elements of variation technique. In each suite at least the beginnings of the allemandes and courantes employ the same harmonic scheme, and utilize similar melodic patterns. -
