Musicology:
The Irish-flavored A Hill Tune, a four-minute miniature tone poem for solo piano, was composed in 1920. Based on a melody from the first movement of Bax's String Quintet (1908), A Hill Tune opens with playful rippling figures in the right hand over more spacious material in the left. After a passionate central section, featuring fanfare-like melodic motifs, the composition ends quietly and lyrically. -
