This song, whose title translates as "In the Horror of Dark Night, " is a setting of a poem by Carlo Angiolini. The poem concerns a man who thinks that his distant lover has betrayed him. The music is uneasy in tone—the minor mode predominates, and there are some interesting chromatic turns. Tremolos in the low register of the piano further the uneasy mood.
