L'allegro marinaro was composed during the composer's years in Milan, between 1827 and 1833. It is a highly dramatic work in G major. The opening phrases are in a furioso style with smooth, lyrical answers. The center of the poem speaks of the singer's hopes, but recurring phrases that set words like storm and courage are set with bravura emphasis. The poem is something of a narrative, and is set at the seashore. The poet is speaking to the lost sailor, begging him to return and live to see another day, and to tell the wild stories of his adventures to his disbelieving mother.
