Musicology:
This scena ed aria was probably composed when Bellini was still a student at the conservatory. It is a typical dramatic exercise that was required of all composing students at the time. It is highly operatic in conception, and the piano accompaniment imitates the opera orchestra of Bellini's day. There is a big bravura opening for the vocal solo, which quickly settles into a calm and lyrical solo, full of expressive roulades and vocal inflections. There are declaimed words in the setting, and the closing, which speaks of the beloved being free of his lover, is carefree, happy, and energetic. -
