Musicology:
It was just over a year before leaving Spain for Buenos Aires in 1717 that Domenico Zipoli composed his Toccata per organo. Zipoli, who had at one point studied with Domenico Scarlatti, remained rather unknown to the Western musical world after his death in 1726; largely to advertise this neglected composer's work, Alberto Ginastera recreated Zipoli's Toccata in 1970 for performance on the piano.

Genre: Other Keyboard
Pr. Instrument: Piano
The piece begins with a characteristic introductory passage in minor mode, ending with a picardy third in major. The subsequent section consists of an antiphonal dialogue between right and left hands that begins with simple melodies but ends with the exchange of dramatic chordal gestures. A brief contrapuntal section leads to a rather free cadenza-like passage that heralds the dramatic chordal statements that end the piece.
