Musicology:
This is an example of the golden days of classic Argentine tango, written by one of the masters of the genre. The original work was a vocal tango with a light rhythm and a gentle and unusually innocent theme of great tenderness. As a companion piece for a tango project organized by $Rubén D'artagnan González}, concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, an arrangement of Gardel's work was made for a sextet of primarily classical players. The arrangement is smooth, subtle, and nicely colored, with active writing for accompaniment parts. The original song was written, by the way, for a 1934 film set in New York City. A young newsboy in the film was played by none other than Astor Piazzolla. -
