  • Theme and Variations in D- (after sextet for strings, Op.18)
    Key: D-
    Year: 1860
    Genre: Variations
    Pr. Instrument: Piano

Brahms transcribed this set of six variations from his String Sextet Opus 18 as a birthday present for Clara Schumann. As such, there is some awkward piano writing, but surprisingly not overly difficult or uncharacteristic of Brahms' usual thick style. The set, or actually the movement, as that is how it was originally conceived, was intended for concert performance, but is unfortunately almost never heard. The entire piece is effective and full of Brahms' typical subtleties of structure and melodic and harmonic beauty. The Third Variation, with its rapid left-hand scales, is probably the most pianistic.
