This was not the first time that Faure was attracted to Maeterlinck's famous drama, though here, oddly enough, he chose to set for this song an English adaptation by J. W. MacKail, one which has only an incidental resemblance to the more mysterious and symbolic original and changes the text to more of a narrative. Faure's setting is a dramatic and foreboding one, one which perhaps reflects some of the emotions of his later years, when he was plagued by deafness, though still enjoying fame and renown.
