Ryuchi Sakamoto's compilation BTTB (Back to the Basics) (2000) consists of sixteen works for solo piano that reflect the diversity of the composer's background and interests. Sakamoto's career has encompassed everything from pop electronica to film music to "serious" music for the concert hall. Such eclecticism extends to the composer's musical influences: BTTB begins with Energy Flow, based on music Sakamoto wrote for a television commercial for a health product. The remainder of the collection makes its way through pieces inspired in whole or part by Celtic music (Put Your Hands Up), Ravel and Poulenc (Sonatine), Brahms (Intermezzo), Bach (Chorale No. 1), Gregorian chant (Chorale No. 2), and Latin American music (Bachata).
