Musicology:
In 1934-1935, Bloch wrote Voice in the Wilderness, a symphonic poem with cello obbligato. Not surprisingly he also wrote a version for cello and piano. But more curiously, he wrote a shortened version for piano solo, which lasts roughly half as long as its source. This work is Visions & Prophecies.

Recasting a work as radically as Bloch did here is instructive. The original orchestration was resourceful, calling on a large orchestra and an appropriately soulful cello soloist. Turning this music into a vehicle for the percussive piano changes it drastically. The piano gets to play most of the more energetic moments from an otherwise introspective piece. The listener interested in Bloch's piano music might find the Piano Sonata a more satisfying experience.
