Musicology:
As the second of the Taverner-Tye-Sheppard settings, this mass is harmonically richer than the Taverner or the Sheppard, favoring the middle and lower ranges and gradually developing from the fleeting moments in which modal cycles in the manner of Thomas Tallis occur to the exceedingly strange harmonies at cadence points in the "Agnus Dei I, II & III". Tye also adds extra beats to the melody line making it less symmetrical and regular in shape, enriching the texture of this fascinating and lovely work. -
