Musicology:
Schubert set Ludwig Kosegarten's "Abends unter der Linde" (Evening Beneath the Linden Trees) twice: once on July 24, 1815, and then again, the next day. The first setting, called Abends unter der Linde I (D. 235), sets the first two verses of Kosegarten's poem strophically to a long-breathed legato vocal melody with a simple and unaffected piano accompaniment. Although the depth of emotion suggested by the verse ("Whence the nameless longing that oppresses my heart") does not seem to be expressed in Schubert's classically poised and restrained setting, in fact the melody can be made to ache and throb when sung by a singer of consummate breath control. -
