This is one of the oldest European Christmas carols to survive to modern times. It is of French origin, but has been translated into other languages. The English version, known as Christmas Comes Anew, is also popular, but as in numerous translations of songs and poems, takes many liberties with the French text. In the end, though, the spirit of the words is retained and, of course, the melody is the same for both renditions. That melody is perky and chipper in its colorful main section, a bit less energetic and spirited in its second subject, perhaps, but still colorful and lively. The first part of the theme is in a higher vocal range than the more mellow latter half. This carol, with its text about the birth of Christ and scene at the manger and its simple, jaunty innocence, is often sung by children's groups. Adults perform it as well, and there are numerous instrumental arrangements of its melody, including one for brass ensemble. This charming carol will appeal to Christmas music enthusiasts and those interested in light traditional songs.
