Musicology:
The bassoon starts out the opening Allegro non molto with an easygoing melody, after which the strings come in with triplet figures. Eventually the movement settles into the standard pattern of alternations between tutti and solo passages. The subsequent Andante molto begins with a mildly concerned string passage in the minor mode. The bassoon comes in and extends this mood in its cantilena that forms the center of the movement. The concluding Allegro starts out with with an infectiously happy rhythmically marked ritornello. The bassoon comes in with some virtuosic figures, furthering the generally happy mood that persists throughout the movement. -
