Musicology:
Alissa is a cycle of songs extracted from segments from André Gide's poem La porte étroite (The Narrow Door). It is a tender and sorrowful monologue of great eloquence; the sounds are quite rich, yet the approach is somewhat detached, creating a highly poignant combination of great sensitivity. Milhaud revised the music several times until it reached a definitive state in 1931; his alterations are mostly retouchings of details, involving minor deletions and harmonic adjustments. -
