  • Celestial Fantasy, for string orchestra, Op.44
    Year: 1935-44
    Genre: Other Orchestral
    Pr. Instrument: String Orchestra
The Celestial Fantasy, completed in 1944, derives from music Hovhaness originally wrote as early as 1935. He dedicated the Fantasy to the saint and poet Nerses Shnorhali, who led the Armenian Church around the year 1100. Marked "noble and heroic" in the score, the piece begins in the low strings with a darkly impressive hymn of a rather Armenian cast. After some development of the hymn theme a four-voice fugue evolves naturally out of the polyphony that preceded it, and builds to a rapturous conclusion.
