Musicology:
This extremely sentimental song is of a type that was very popular in the 19th century, love songs addressed to the dead. Like most of Foster's songs this one is strophic, meaning that each verse and chorus is set to the same music. It is said that Foster was inspired to write this song by the tragic death of a neighbor's young daughter who was run over by a horse drawn dray. Although he gave comfort to the neighbor that evening, he gave the young girl immortality with this beautiful song. -
