Musicology:
While the song starts out with a regular and steady rhythm and melodic line, the rising piano lines suggesting the strumming of a mandolin or guitar that might accompany a serenade, this pattern is broken after the first quatrain, as if the lover were caught up in bliss to the point of forgetting prepared lines. In the next section, the vocal lines continue their rhapsodic tone, but the accompaniment introduces several new themes, though still keeping to brief phrases. In the last quatrain, the earlier themes return, though with some modifications, and the song is brought to its climax with the final exclamation. -
