The short solo voice composition Only is Feldman's earliest known composition, dating from his 20th year (although the work wasn't actually published until much later, in 1976). It is a setting of the Sonnet XXIII from Rainer Maria Rilke's Sonette an Orpheus, translated into English by J.B. Leishman. The simple modal melody is chant-like, quite tonal but incorporating a couple of pointed dissonances. While it is uncharacteristic of the later Feldman style, Only's intimacy and simplicity has attracted quite a number of performers.
