Voices and Cello is one of Feldman's several miniatures from the 1970s in which the voices—in this case, two high women's voices—are used essentially as instruments, not singing a text but rather "oohs" and other non-verbal sounds. The voices and cello intone long, sustained notes that overlap and merge calmly, at irregular intervals, into one another. The pitch content is rather limited; sometimes the three participants converge onto a single note, but then they gradually move apart again. The cello's long notes are spiced by a few pizzicati, particularly toward the end of the six-minute composition. As is typical in Feldman's works, the music is quietly dissonant but never harsh, establishing a free-flowing, seemingly timeless state.
