Musicology:
This is another chorale prelude from the so-named Neumeister Collection. In 1985, Bach enthusiasts, as well as lovers of serious music in general, rejoiced at news that this assemblage of 82 chorales by various composers was discovered at the Yale Library by organist Christoph Wolff. Of the works, 38 were attributed to Bach at the time, although some now challenge authorship of at least two of them. This chorale prelude, "Wir glauben all an einen Gott" (We All Believe in One God), is really a fughetta in which the chorale theme is stated in rather barren sonorities at the outset, then given a quite effective fugal treatment. The chorale theme appears as a somewhat somber creation at the outset, but as contrapuntal lines sprout and textures thicken, it grows in color and majesty. When the richer bass sonorities are played, for example, they both underpin the main line and deftly strike out their own counterline. The music takes on a stately manner here and retains that character through to the end. This masterful piece, with a duration of about two minutes, will have appeal for Baroque and organ-music enthusiasts alike. -
