Composed for the Sunday after the Feast of the Ascension, which fell on May 13, 1725, Bach's Cantata No. 183 "Sie werden euch in den Bann tun" (You Are Cast Out of the Temples) (BWV 183) sets a text by one of Bach's favorite cantata poets, Marianne von Ziegler. Apparently, Bach especially liked this particular text by Ziegler: he had already set it in 1724 (BWV 44). The cantata is scored for bass, tenor, alto and soprano soloists, chorus, a pair of oboe d'amore, a pair of oboe da caccia, strings, and basso continuo. In the second movement, Bach added a piccolo cello. "Sie werden euch in den Bann tun" starts in E minor, with its first and second movements in the tonic. Its third movement starts in the relative major of G major and ends on C major, the tonality of the fourth movement. Its fifth movement is in A minor, the minor subdominant of E minor and the relative minor of E minor. The first movement is a very brief recitative for bass soloist accompanied by chords in the oboe and strings above a pedal point in the continuo. The second movement is a da capo aria marked Molto adagio for anguished tenor soloist, emotionally expressive piccolo cello, and continuo. The third is a recitative for alto soloists, strings, and continuo with alternating comments from each pair of oboes. The fourth is a da capo aria for soprano soloist, a pair of dulcet oboe da caccia playing in unison below the piano strings, and the supple continuo. "Sie werden euch in den Bann tun" concludes with a massive chorale harmonization for chorus and full orchestra colla parte.
