This work has been dated to the period of 1703-1708 by some musicologists, a span Bach spent mostly as organist at the Neue Kirche in Arnstadt (1703-07). While it carries the parenthetical tag "doubtful," many believe it was indeed written by Bach. There is another setting for organ on this chorale theme, the BWV 723 version, which is also of doubtful authorship, and still another, the BWV 604, found in Bach's famous Orgelbüchlein, about which there has never been a question of authorship. This BWV 722 setting of Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ (We Praise You, Jesus Christ) is a colorful one, from the proud, stately opening featuring virtuosic runs up and down the keyboard, to the vibrant, epic character of the music in the latter half of the piece. The mood is generally light and showy throughout the work, with contrapuntal writing that, while skilled, is largely unimaginative. The piece is short, lasting slightly over a minute, but the vigor and joyous manner of the music make it well worth the listener's attention.
