Zufriedenheit I, D.362Year: 1816
Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
Pr. Instruments: Voice & Piano
Schubert set Matthias Claudius' poem "Zufriedenheit" (Contentment) twice: once from early 1816 (D. 362) and again later in the same year (D. 501). Neither song is especially distinguished; both have conventionally cheery A major tunes set against typically jolly piano accompaniment, but at least the earlier version has the virtue of its tiny piano prelude and brief piano postlude that, as Graham Johnson puts it, "winks and smiles" at the listener, at least letting him/her in on the joke at this overly contented man.
