Musicology:
This concerto features two solo horns that spend most of their time in the middle register. The blend of horns and strings makes for a rather stout ensemble sound. The work begins with a short tutti, after which the horns step forward in the first of several concertante segments and solo and tutti episodes alternate rather quickly. As befits the nature of the valveless horns for which Vivaldi wrote the solo material has a fanfarish feeling, although it doesn't recall hunting music as so much horn music does.

Double Horn Concerto in F, RV538Key: F
Year: before 1742
Genre: Concerto
Pr. Instrument: French Horn
- 1.Allegro
- 2.Largo
- 3.Allegro non molto
The horns do not play in the central Largo, which features an extended and pensive cantilena for a solo cello. The concluding Allegro non molto again features the horns holding forth in the tutti as well as the solo sections of a movement whose well-marked rhythmic content distantly hints at the feel of a minuet.
