It is not that I love you less (The Self-Banish'd)Year: 1700
Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
Pr. Instrument: Voice
This graceful song sounds almost reactionary when it opens, as it
seems to reflect the lute songs of such past masters as Dowland
or Campion, rather than the contemporary world of the baroque.
Though the pattern is that of a minuet, the interplay of voice
and accompaniment seem far more like an earlier work, with only
an occasional light ornament to remind us that Blow is
a contemporary of Purcell.
However, the repeat of the second verse makes it clear that Blow
could write equally well in both fields. The ornamentation comes
much more thickly, and while the graceful lines of the first repetition
are unchanged in their structure, the trills and turns place this
work firmly in the baroque.
